Ganutell is a craft introduced in Malta around the time of the Knights of St John and is typically found in Churches and private collections as bouquets. The technique of wound thread with wire, forms petals which are assembled to form flowers and leaves. This craft is unfortunately endangered. It enjoyed a brief boost in the 90’s when it was used to make flower arrangements for homes, hair accessories, bouquets, and souvenirs for occasions like Holy Communion and weddings. However, it has again lost its popularity. 

In 2021, I started a line of jewellery using the technique of ganutell. Jewellery is a worn art by which a woman can express herself and it is an essential part of her life; so what better way to boost up the interest in this dying craft. My aim was to take ganutell beyond its traditional parameters and repurpose it into fashion accessories by creating pieces using traditional ganutell techniques and incorporating them with components used to make modern jewellery that is appealing to the modern-day woman. 

I named my line ‘Ganutell Ġojjell’ after my first entry in Ġieħ l-Artiġjanat Malti 2021. In 2024, I won first prize in the textiles category for the Ġieħ l-Artiġjanat Malti 2023 edition with my entry ‘Ganutell Ġojjell – A Twist to Tradition’. 

Ġieħ l-Artiġjanat Malti is an annual awards ceremony organised by the Malta Crafts Foundation, recognising excellence in Maltese craftsmanship and artistic innovation.
